तत्र ब्रह्मर्षयः सर्वे देवर्षयश्च सत्तम ।
राजर्षयश्च तत्रासन्द्रष्टुं भरतपुङ्गवम् ॥ ५ ॥

tatra brahmarṣayaḥ sarve devarṣayaś ca sattama
rājarṣayaś ca tatrāsan draṣṭuṁ bharata-puṅgavam

Synonyms
sattama — O best of saints [Śaunaka]; tatra — at that time [tadā16]; sarve — all; brahmarṣayaḥ — the brāhmaṇa sages [headed by Vyāsa;17 and Bhṛgu18]; ca — and; devarṣayaḥ — the celestial sages [headed by Nārada19]; ca — and; rājarṣayaḥ — the royal sages [headed by Viśvāmitra20]; āsan — assembled [āgatya sthitavantaḥ21]; tatra — there [arrived there in that precise moment (tat-kṣaṇam evāgatā ity arthaḥ)]; draṣṭum — to see; bharata-puṅgavam — the foremost of the Bharatas [(bharata-vaṁśya-śreṣṭham);22 (bhīṣmam)].
Translation
O best of saints [Śaunaka], at that time, all the brāhmaṇa sages, celestial sages, and royal sages assembled there to see Bhīṣma, the foremost of the Bharatas.
