सर्वे बभूवुस्ते तूष्णीं वयांसीव दिनात्यये ॥ ४४ ॥
sarve babhūvus te tūṣṇīṁ vayāṁsīva dinātyaye
Synonyms
ājñāya — perceiving [ālakṣya162]; bhīṣmam — [that] Bhīṣma; sampadyamānam — had entered [become united with (militam); or attained (prāptavantam) after first casting off all limiting adjuncts (sarvopādhi-vidhūnana-pūrvakam)163]; niṣkale — the unlimited [meaning He who is free from all limiting adjuncts (nirupādhau); being situated beyond the extrinsic potency (māyātītaḥ)164]; brahmaṇi — Supreme Brahman [in human form (narākṛti para-brahma-rūpaḥ), here, entering into Him means that he attained His association (tasmin sampadyamānatā ca tat-saṅgati eva)165]; te sarve — everyone present there; babhūvuḥ — became; tūṣṇīm — silent; vayāṁsi iva — like birds [pakṣiṇas tad-vat166]; dina-atyaye — at the end of the day.
Translation
Perceiving that Bhīṣma had entered the unlimited Supreme Brahman, everyone present there fell silent, like birds at the end of the day.
