कृष्णे लसत्पीतपटे चतुर्भुजे पुरः स्थितेऽमीलितदृग्व्यधारयत् ॥ ३० ॥
vimukta-saṅgaṁ mana ādi-pūruṣe
kṛṣṇe lasat-pīta-paṭe catur-bhuje
puraḥ sthite’mīlita-dṛg vyadhārayat
Synonyms
tadā — thereupon; sahasraṇīḥ — Bhīṣma, who had led thousands of warriors in battle [yuddhe samīpa-sthān sahasraṁ rathino nayati pālayati92]; upasaṁhṛtya — concluded [or terminated (viramya)93]; giraḥ — his speech [withdrawing his attention from all else (anyataḥ pratyāhṛtya)94]; vyadhārayat — [and] fixed; manaḥ — his mind; vimukta-saṅgam — which was completely free from attachment [to all other objects (viṣayāntarato viraktim)]; ādi-pūruṣe — on the Primeval Person; catur-bhuje — the four-armed; kṛṣṇe — Śrī Kṛṣṇa; lasat-pīta-paṭe — who was dressed in shining yellow garments; puraḥ sthite — and present directly before him; amīlita-dṛk — while he gazed upon Him with unblinking eyes [while other yogīs envision Bhagavān’s form (prakalpya-paśyanti) within their minds (manasā) while keeping their eyes closed (mīlita-dṛśa eva), Bhīṣma kept his eyes wide-open (amīlita-dṛk) so that he would not have to take the trouble to imagine Kṛṣṇa’s form (tasya tu kalpanā-kleśo’pi nābhūt), since the latter was present directly before him (tatra hetum āha puraḥ sthite iti)].
Translation
At that time, Bhīṣma, who had led thousands of warriors in battle, concluded his speech and fixed his mind, which was completely free from attachment, on the Primeval Person, the four-armed Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who was dressed in shining yellow garments and present directly before him, while he gazed upon Him with unblinking eyes.
