SB 1.9.19–20
देवर्षिर्नारदः साक्षाद्भगवान्कपिलो नृप ॥ १९ ॥
यं मन्यसे मातुलेयं प्रियं मित्रं सुहृत्तमम् ।
अकरोः सचिवं दूतं सौहृदादथ सारथिम् ॥ २० ॥
devarṣir nāradaḥ sākṣād bhagavān kapilo nṛpa
yaṁ manyase mātuleyaṁ priyaṁ mitraṁ suhṛttamam
akaroḥ sacivaṁ dūtaṁ sauhṛdād atha sārathim
Synonyms
nṛpa — O King; bhagavān — Bhagavān; śivaḥ — Śiva; devarṣiḥ — the celestial sage; nāradaḥ — Nārada; bhagavān — [and] Bhagavān; kapilaḥ — Kapila; sākṣāt — Himself; veda — know; guhyatamam — the most secret; anubhāvam — glory [or majesty (prabhāvam)67]; asya — of Him [Śrī Kṛṣṇa]; [which is unknown to others, since this is the most carefully hidden secret even in the Vedas (nānyaḥ, yato vedeṣv api guhyatamam iti)68]; yam — whom; [out of ignorance (ajñānāt)]; manyase — you thought to be; mātuleyam — your maternal cousin [the son of Devakī (devakyāḥ sutam), who was the wife of Kuntī’s brother, Vasudeva]; priyam — your dearest object of affection [prīti-viṣayam]; mitram — your friend [who behaved affectionately toward you (prīti-kartāram)]; suhṛttamam — [and] greatest well-wisher [who acted for your well-being in an unconditional manner, without expecting anything in return (upakārānapekṣyopakārakam)]; atha — and [whom, although the Supreme Regulator of all beings (sarveśvarasyāpi)69]; sauhṛdāt — out of love [(premṇa eva hetoḥ);70 or out of a feeling of great intimacy (viśvāsāt)]; akaroḥ — you engaged [kṛtavān asi]; sacivam — as your counselor [mantriṇam]; dūtam — messenger; sārathim — [and] charioteer.
Translation
O King, Bhagavān Śiva, the celestial sage Nārada, and Bhagavān Kapila Himself know the most secret glory of Him [Śrī Kṛṣṇa], whom you thought to be your maternal cousin, your dearest object of affection, your friend, and greatest well-wisher, and whom, out of love, you engaged as your counselor, messenger, and charioteer.
