समं चरन्तं सर्वत्र भूतानां यन्मिथः कलिः ॥ २८ ॥
samaṁ carantaṁ sarvatra bhūtānāṁ yan mithaḥ kaliḥ
Synonyms
manye — I consider; tvām — You; kālam — as Time [and not merely as the son of Devakī (na tu devakī-putram);105 as the direct embodiment of Time and hence altogether free of its effects in the form of birth and death (kāla-śarīrakam ata eva kāla-kṛta-janma-maraṇādi-rahitam)106]; īśānam — as the Supreme Regulator [niyantāram]; anādi-nidhanam — as without beginning or end [ādy-anta-śūnyam]; vibhum — as omnipotent [(prabhum); and omnipresent (vyāpakam)107]; carantam — [and] as moving; samam — impartially [perfectly in accordance with the way things are (yathā bhavati tathā); as the impartial awarder of the fruits of happiness and distress in accordance with the actions of living beings (tat-tat-prāṇi-karmānusāreṇa duḥkha-sukhādi-phala-dātṛtvam eva samatvam)108]; sarvatra — everywhere; [to which Kṛṣṇa may object, “But how can I be impartial if I drove Arjuna’s chariot?” (nanu pārtha-sārather mama kathaṁ sāmyam). To this Kuntī replies (tatrāha).]; yat — because [yataḥ]; mithaḥ — the mutual; kaliḥ — conflict [kalahaḥ]; bhūtānām — between living beings; [takes place of its own accord (bhavati), with You as its instrument of actualization (tvattaḥ nimitta-bhūtāt); in reality, however, You Yourself are without bias (na tu svatas tvayi vaiṣamyam)].
Translation
I consider You as Time, as the Supreme Regulator, as without beginning or end, as omnipotent, and as moving impartially everywhere, because the mutual conflict between living beings takes place of its own accord [with You as its instrument of actualization].
