SB 1.8.19

मायाजवनिकाच्छन्नमज्ञाधोक्षजमव्ययम् ।
न लक्ष्यसे मूढदृशा नटो नाट्यधरो यथा ॥ १९ ॥
māyā-javanikācchannam ajñādhokṣajam avyayam
na lakṣyase mūḍha-dṛśā naṭo nāṭyadharo yathā

Synonyms

[The cause (hetu) of Kṛṣṇa’s being imperceptible (alakṣyam) is now spoken of in the following two verses (alakṣyatve hetur māyetyādi pada-dvayam).67]; [I (aham)68]; ajñā — who am ignorant [devoid of knowledge of pure devotion (bhakti-yogānabhijñā)]; [simply offer obeisance unto You (kevalaṁ namasyāmi)69]; ācchannam — who are concealed [praticchannam]; javanikā — [by] the veil [or by the magical cloak of invisibility (tiraskariṇī-rūpā tayā)]; māyā — [of] māyā; adhokṣajam — who are beyond sense perception [by Your very own essential nature (svarūpata evendriya-jñānātītatvāt);70 or in regard to whom (yasmāt) knowledge derived from the senses (akṣajaṁ, indriyajaṁ jñānam) lies below the range of access (adhaḥ)]; avyayam — [and] who are immutable [or indivisible (aparicchinnam); implying that although You are present everywhere, You remain undiffused by such expansion (sarvatra sthito’py avyayaṁ tena saha na vyeti)71]; [thus, You (tvam)]; na lakṣyase — cannot be known [or perceived (na dṛśyase)72]; mūḍha-dṛśā — by a person of bewildered vision [by one who is identified with the body (dehābhimāninā puṁsā)]; yathā — just as; naṭaḥ — an actor; nāṭya-dharaḥ — disguised in a stage costume [cannot be recognized (na lakṣyate) by an uncultured spectator (mūḍha-dṛśā)73].

Translation

I, who am ignorant [of bhakti-yoga], simply offer obeisance unto You, who are concealed by the veil of māyā, beyond sense perception, and immutable. Thus, You cannot be known by a person of bewildered vision, just as an actor disguised in a stage costume cannot be recognized by an uncultured spectator.
