स्वमाययावृणोद्गर्भं वैराट्याः कुरुतन्तवे ॥ १४ ॥
sva-māyayāvṛṇod garbhaṁ vairāṭyāḥ kuru-tantave
Synonyms
hariḥ — Hari [Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who removes the misery of His devotees (bhakta-duḥkha-hartā śrī kṛṣṇa)52]; ātmā — the Immanent Self [because He is the Immanent Self (yataḥ antaryāmī)53]; sarva-bhūtānām — of all living beings; yoga-īśvaraḥ — [and] the Master of yoga [by the power of which, Hari, in His own form as Kṛṣṇa, was able to enter (yoga-balena harir iti kṛṣṇa-rūpeṇa praviśya);54 here the term yogeśvaraḥ is used to signify that although He was present externally, He was able simultaneously to enter within (yogeśvara iti bahiḥsthasyāpi praveśa-ghaṭanārtham uktam)]; antaḥsthaḥ — became situated in the interior; vairāṭyāḥ — of Uttarā [the daughter of King Virāṭa]; āvṛṇot — [and] covered [āvṛtavān]; garbham — [her] womb [or the child within the womb (bālam āvṛṇot), meaning that He protected the child from the brahmāstra by encircling him all around (sarvataḥ paribhraman brahmāstrato rarakṣety arthaḥ)55]; sva-māyayā — by means of His own intrinsic potency [yoga-māyā;56 or by His potency of grace directed toward His own people, the Pāṇḍavas (sveṣu pāṇḍaveṣu yā māyā kṛpā tayā)57]; kuru-tantave — to protect the Kuru dynasty [for the continuance of their dynasty (santānāya), here the statement is made in regard to the Pāṇḍavas as well, since their lineage also derives from the same Kuru dynasty (pāṇḍavānām api kuru-vaṁśajatvād evam uktam)].
Translation
Hari, the Immanent Self of all living beings and the Master of yoga, entered within Uttarā and covered her womb by means of His own intrinsic potency to protect the Kuru dynasty.
