SB 1.7.9

शौनक उवाच
स वै निवृत्तिनिरतः सर्वत्रोपेक्षको मुनिः ।
कस्य वा बृहतीमेतामात्मारामः समभ्यसत् ॥ ९ ॥
śaunaka uvāca
sa vai nivṛtti-nirataḥ sarvatropekṣako muniḥ
kasya vā bṛhatīm etām ātmārāmaḥ samabhyasat

Synonyms

śaunakaḥ — Śrī Śaunaka; uvāca — inquired; saḥ vai — he indeed [Śrī Śuka]; nivṛtti-nirataḥ — delighted in the state of utter nonattachment; upekṣakaḥ — [and] was thus indifferent; sarvatra — toward everything; muniḥ — [he was] a sage; ātmārāmaḥ — who was enraptured in the Self alone; kasya vā — [so] for what reason [hetoḥ47]; samabhyasat — did he undertake the study; etām — [of] this; bṛhatīm — voluminous composition [vitatām48].

Translation

Śrī Śaunaka inquired: He indeed [Śrī Śuka] delighted in the state of utter nonattachment and was thus indifferent toward everything. He was a sage who was enraptured in the Self alone (ātmārāma); so why did he undertake the study of this voluminous composition?
