शुकमध्यापयामास निवृत्तिनिरतं मुनिम् ॥ ८ ॥
śukam adhyāpayām āsa nivṛtti-nirataṁ munim
Synonyms
kṛtvā — after composing [a brief tract on bhakti (prathamataḥ svayaṁ saṅkṣipta-bhaktikaṁ kṛtvā);40 in accordance with the līlā-vision self-disclosed to him by Bhagavān in the state of samādhi (samādhau tāvad dṛṣṭvā līlā-darśanānusāreṇa likhitvā)41]; ca — and; anukramya — revising [(sodhayitvā);42 setting the work as a whole in order in accordance with the storyline (anupūrvyeṇa yathākhyāna-krameṇa vinyasya);43 or arranging the work in an ordered fashion determined by the singular preeminence (eka-pradhānatayā) of bhagavad-bhakti in accordance with the sequence of Nārada’s instructions (nāradopadeśād anukrameṇa)44]; saṁhitām-bhāgavatīm — this Bhāgavata-saṁhitā; saḥ — he [Vyāsa]; adhyāpayāmāsa — taught it; ātma-jam — to his son; munim — the sage; śukam — Śrī Śuka; nivṛtti-niratam — who delighted in the state of utter nonattachment [because he was absorbed in the immediate experience of the bliss of Brahman (brahmānandānubhava-nimagnatvāt), meaning that this was his perpetual state, without the slightest momentary interruption or intervention (sarvato-nivṛttau nirataṁ tatra tatrāvyabhicāriṇam apīty arthaḥ)45]; [here, Vyāsa, having directly experienced that prema, which is the Bhāgavata’s ultimate goal, is superior even to the bliss of Brahman, taught the Bhāgavata even to one such as Śuka, to shift his attention to the unique bliss of prema (premno brahmānandānubhavād api paramatvam anubhūtavān eva … tām adhyāpayāmāsa)46].
Translation
After composing and revising this Bhāgavata-saṁhitā, Vyāsa taught it to his son, the sage Śrī Śuka, who delighted in the state of utter nonattachment.
