SB 1.7.52

निशम्य भीमगदितं द्रौपद्याश्च चतुर्भुजः ।
आलोक्य वदनं सख्युरिदमाह हसन्निव ॥ ५२ ॥
niśamya bhīma-gaditaṁ draupadyāś ca catur-bhujaḥ
ālokya vadanaṁ sakhyur idam āha hasann iva

Synonyms

niśamya — after hearing [srutvā196]; [the words (vacanam)197]; gaditam — spoken; bhīma — [by] Bhīma; ca — and; draupadyāḥ — [those] of Draupadī; catuḥ-bhujaḥ — the four-handed Kṛṣṇa [here, by the mention of four hands, it is implied that Kṛṣṇa manifested four arms to restrain both Bhīma and Draupadī (ubhayoḥ samvaraṇāyāviṣkṛta catur-bhuja iti), the former who was ready to kill Aśvatthāmā and the latter who at once tried to prevent Bhīma from doing so (bhīme taṁ hantuṁ pravṛte draupadyāñ ca sahasā tan-nivāraṇe pravṛttāyām)198]; ālokya — looked upon; vadanam — the face; sakhyuḥ — of His friend [Arjuna, who was in doubt (sandihānasya sakhyur arjunasya)199]; āha — [and] spoke; idam — the following words [vakṣyamāṇam200]; hasan iva — as if smiling [here, the words “as if smiling” imply that Kṛṣṇa exhibited a smile as if only to suggest, “My friend, today I will test the subtlety of your discernment” (hasann iveti sakhe tvad-buddher adya sūkṣmatvaṁ parīkṣiṣye ity etad vyañjakam), meaning that He simply smiled but did not laugh (smita-mātram āviṣkurvan na tu hāsyam ity arthaḥ)201].

Translation

After hearing the words spoken by Bhīma and Draupadī, the four-handed Kṛṣṇa looked upon the face of His friend, Arjuna, and spoke the following words, as if smiling.
