ब्रह्मबन्धुर्न हन्तव्य आततायी वधार्हणः ।
मयैवोभयमाम्नातं परिपाह्यनुशासनम् ॥ ५३ ॥
brahma-bandhur na hantavya ātatāyī vadhārhaṇaḥ
mayaivobhayam āmnātaṁ paripāhy anuśāsanam
Synonyms
śrī-bhagavān — Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa; uvāca — said; brahma-bandhuḥ — a degraded brāhmaṇa; na hantavyaḥ — is not to be killed; [whereas]; ātatāyī — a murderer; vadha-arhaṇaḥ — deserves to be killed; paripāhi — you must carry out [paripālaya202]; ubhayam eva — “both”; anuśāsanam — of these instructions; āmnātam — [which] have been enjoined [anujñātam203]; mayā — by Me [as the author of the sacred texts (āmnāya-kartā);204 or as the manifesting source or revealer of the scriptures (śāstra-kartā)205].
Translation
Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: A degraded brāhmaṇa should not be killed, whereas a murderer deserves to be killed. You must carry out “both” of these instructions, which have been enjoined by Me [as the author of the sacred texts].
