न भर्तुर्नात्मनश्चार्थे योऽहन्सुप्तान्शिशून्वृथा ॥ ५१ ॥
na bhartur nātmanaś cārthe yo’han suptān śiśūn vṛthā
Synonyms
amarṣitaḥ — enraged; tatra — at this turn of events [tasyām avasthāyām192]; bhīmaḥ — Bhīma; āha — spoke [as follows]; vadhaḥ — death; smṛtaḥ — is enjoined [according to Smṛti, or the law books193]; śreyān — as beneficial [(śreṣṭhaḥ), otherwise his descent to hell is occasioned (anyathā tasya naraka-pāta-prasaṅgāt)194]; tasya — for him [for one such as the son of Droṇa (tathā-vidhasya drauneḥ)]; yaḥ — who; ahan — has slain [jaghān]; suptān — sleeping; śiśūn — boys; vṛthā — in vain; arthe — with gain; na bhartuḥ — neither for his master [Duryodhana195]; na ca ātmanaḥ — nor for his own self.
Translation
Then, enraged by their verdict, Bhīma spoke as follows: “Death is enjoined [according to the law] as beneficial for a person who has slain sleeping boys in vain without any gain either for his master or for his own self.”
