yayā sammohito jīva ātmānaṁ tri-guṇātmakam
paro’pi manute’narthaṁ tat-kṛtaṁ cābhipadyate

Synonyms

[Vyāsa also saw the living beings’ state of conditional existence, effected by Īśvara’s extrinsic potency, as expressed in the verse that follows (īśa-māyā-kṛtāñ ca jīvānāṁ saṁsṛtim apaśyad).20 This implies that he saw the jīvas’ constitutional distinction from Parameśvara, which establishes the need for a means of attainment and an end state to be attained (abhidheyasya prayojanasya ca sthāpakaṁ jīvasya svarūpata eva parameśvarād vailakṣaṇyam apaśyad).21]; sammohitaḥ — bewildered [having projected a false identity due to the concealment of its essential nature (svarūpāvaraṇena vikṣiptaḥ)]; yayā — by this [extrinsic potency (māyayā)]; jīvaḥ — the individual living being; paraḥ api — although transcendental [to the three guṇas (guṇa-trayād vyatirikto’pi); being of the essential nature of consciousness alone (svayaṁ cid-rūpatvena)22]; manute — thinks of [or considers (manyate)23]; ātmānam — itself; tri-guṇa-ātmakam — as constituted of the three guṇas [as the body constituted of the evolutes of the three guṇas (guṇa-traya-pariṇāmātmakaṁ śarīram eva)24]; ca — and [thus]; abhipadyate — undergoes [prāpnoti]; anartham — the defilement [beginning from the false sense of doership (kartṛtvādikañ ca); or the misery of, and addiction to, cyclic existence (saṁsāra-vyasanam)25]; tat-kṛtam — resulting from this misidentification [with the three guṇas (tri-guṇatvābhimāna-kṛtam); or resulting from the self’s misidentification with the body (dehātma-bhrama-kṛtam)26].

Translation

Bewildered by this extrinsic potency, the individual living being, although transcendental to the three guṇas, thinks of itself as constituted of the three guṇas and thus undergoes the defilement resulting from this identification.
