[Vyāsa also saw (tañ cāpaśyat)27]; sākṣāt — [that] the direct [uninterrupted and unobstructed (avyavadhānena)28]; bhakti-yogam — yoga of devotion [here implying sādhana-bhakti, characterized by hearing, singing, and so on, and not prema-bhakti, because practice alone is dependent on instructions, whereas prema is dependent only on Bhagavān’s causeless grace (anuṣṭhānaṁ hy upadeśāpekṣyaṁ prema tu tat-prasādāpekṣyam iti)29]; adhokṣaje — to Adhokṣaja [Śrī Kṛṣṇa]; [is the means (abhidheyam)30]; upaśamam — to uproot; anartha — this defilement; [having personally witnessed all this in the state of samādhi (etat sarvaṁ svayaṁ dṛṣtvā); meaning, having directly perceived in order, first Pūrṇa Bhagavān, His portions (tad-aṁśān), including the puruṣāvatāras and guṇāvatāras, Brahman, which is the signifier of His completion (pūrti-rūpaṁ), His effulgence in the form of His variegated conscious potency (tat-kānti-bhūtām aneka-prabhedavatīṁ cic-chaktim), His extrinsic potency (bahiraṅgā-śaktim), māyā, which was posterior to Him (pṛṣṭhe), the jīvas, who are bewildered by māyā, and His potency of grace (anugrahā-śakti-vilāsa-bhūtām) in the form of bhakti, the preeminent aspect of His all-exceeding intrinsic potency that dispels the jīvas’ delusion (tasyās tan-moha-nivarttikāṁ sarvato’pi mahatīṁ cic-chakti-mukhyām)31]; vidvān — the all-seeing Vyāsa [sarva-jñānavān vyāsaḥ32]; cakre — composed; sātvata-saṁhitām — this Sātvata-saṁhitā [Śrīmad Bhāgavata, which discloses the ontological truth regarding all of the above mentioned fundamentals (etāṁ sarva-tattva-prakāśikām)33]; lokasya — for the benefit of people in general [lokasyopakārāya34]; [evam] ajānataḥ — who are unaware of this fact [that bhakti is the means of uprooting the defilement of the threefold miseries (tāpa-traya-rūpānartha-upaśamanātmakam-upāyam-ajānataḥ)35]; [by these three verses, the essential import of Śrīmad Bhāgavata has been disclosed in brief (tad-anena śloka-trayeṇa śrī bhāgavatārthaḥ saṅkṣepeṇa darśitaḥ)].

Translation

Vyāsa also saw that direct bhakti-yoga to Adhokṣaja, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, is the means to uproot this defilement. [Having personally witnessed all these fundamental truths in the state of samādhi,] the all-seeing Vyāsa composed this Sātvata-saṁhitā (Śrīmad Bhāgavata) for the benefit of people in general, who are unaware of this fact.
