SB 1.7.4
अपश्यत्पुरुषं पूर्णं मायां च तदपाश्रयाम् ॥ ४ ॥
apaśyat puruṣaṁ pūrṇaṁ māyāṁ ca tad-apāśrayām
Synonyms
amale — in [his] pure; manasi — heart; samyak — [which was] perfectly; praṇihite — fixed [(niścale);16 or established in transcognitive recollection of Bhagavān’s divine acts, as instructed to him by Śrī Nārada in SB 1.5.13 (samāhite, samādhinānusmara tad-viceṣṭitam)17]; bhakti-yogena — through the yoga of unalloyed devotion [which was the cause of such fixity (niścale atra hetuḥ)]; [Vyāsa]; apaśyat — saw; pūrṇam — the Complete [Svayaṁ Bhagavān;18 Śrī Kṛṣṇa, as explicitly mentioned three verses later in SB 1.7.7 (śrī kṛṣṇam ity … agrimokteḥ). By the word pūrṇam, it is implied that Vyāsa saw Him as self-endowed with His own intrinsic conscious potency (svarūpa-bhūtāṁ cic-chaktim), His integrated portions (aṁśas), the portions of His portions (kalās), His avatāras, and unqualified Brahman, which is Itself a signifier of completion (pūrti-liṅgena), as when seeing the full moon (pūrṇaṁ candram apaśyat), one automatically sees it as inclusive of its effulgence (kānteḥ), its various phases (aṁśa-kalānām), and its final completion (pūrteḥ)]; puruṣam — Original Person [īśvaram;19 who is of personal form (puruṣākāram)]; ca — along with; māyām — His extrinsic potency [here, however, because māyā, which is Bhagavān’s extrinsic potency (bahiraṅgāyāḥ śakteḥ), is opposite in fundamental nature to Him (tad-viparīta dharmavatyāḥ), it is not seen as included within the immediate vision of Him (tad-darśanena darśanaṁ na bhavatīti), and hence it is mentioned separately (pṛthag ullikhati māyāṁ ceti)]; tat-apāśrayām — [which was] apart from and yet supported by Him [it was seen as apart from, or in others words, as posterior to Him, and as under His shelter (tasya apa aparaḥ paścima-bhāga eva āśrayo yasyāḥ)].
Translation
In his pure heart, which was established in perfect fixity through the yoga of unalloyed devotion, Vyāsa saw the Complete Original Person along with His extrinsic potency, māyā, which was apart from and yet supported by Him.
