आसीनोऽप उपस्पृश्य प्रणिदध्यौ मनः स्वयम् ॥ ३ ॥
āsīno’pa upaspṛśya praṇidadhyau manaḥ svayam
Synonyms
tasmin — in that; āśrame — hermitage; sve — of his [svakīye6]; maṇḍite — surrounded [ornamented (alaṅkṛte);7 or beautified (śobhamāne)8]; ṣaṇḍa — [by] a cluster [samūhena9]; badarī — [of] jujube trees [badarīṇām vṛkṣāṇām10]; vyāsaḥ — Vyāsa; āsīnaḥ — sat down; apaḥ upaspṛśya — sipped water [performed ācamana (ācamanaṁ kṛtvā)11]; praṇidadhyau — [and] concentrated [sthirīcakāra12]; manaḥ — [his] mind [meaning that he meditated according to Nārada’s instructions in SB 1.5.13 to recollect Bhagavān’s divine acts through transcognitive awareness (samādhinānusmareti nāradopadiṣṭaṁ dhyānaṁ kṛtavān)]; svayam — by the determined application of his will [(ātmanā);13 by his independent volition (svatantratayā);14 on the basis of his own eligibility (adhikāritvāt)15].
Translation
In that āśrama of his, surrounded by a cluster of jujube trees, Vyāsa sat down, sipped water, and concentrated his mind by the determined application of his will.
