ब्रह्मनद्यां सरस्वत्यामाश्रमः पश्चिमे तटे ।
शम्याप्रास इति प्रोक्त ऋषीणां सत्रवर्धनः ॥ २ ॥
brahma-nadyāṁ sarasvatyām āśramaḥ paścime taṭe
śamyāprāsa iti prokta ṛṣīṇāṁ satra-vardhanaḥ
Synonyms
sūtaḥ — Śrī Sūta; uvāca — said; paścime taṭe — on the western bank; sarasvatyām — of the Sarasvatī; brahma-nadyām — the river that is intimately related to the Vedas, the brāhmaṇas, austerity, and the Supreme Absolute Truth [(vedānāṁ viprāṇāṁ tapasāṁ parameśvarasya vā sambandhinyāṁ nadyām), according to Amara-kośa, the word brahma means Vedic truth, austerity, a vipra, and the creator3]; āśramaḥ — [there is] a hermitage; iti proktaḥ — known as; śamyāprāsaḥ — Śamyāprāsa [the famous hermitage of Vyāsa (prasiddho vyāsasyāśramo’sti)4]; satra-vardhanaḥ — a place conducive to the sacrifices [or to the ritual acts (karma vardhayati)5]; ṛṣīṇām — of the sages.
Translation
Śrī Sūta said: On the western bank of the Sarasvatī, the river that is intimately related to the Vedas, the brāhmaṇas, austerity, and the Supreme Absolute Truth, there is an āśrama known as Śamyāprāsa, a place conducive to the sacrifices of the ṛṣis.
