वृजिनं नार्हति प्राप्तुं पूज्यं वन्द्यमभीक्ष्णशः ॥ ४६ ॥
vṛjinaṁ nārhati prāptuṁ pūjyaṁ vandyam abhīkṣṇaśaḥ
Synonyms
tat — therefore [tasmāt168]; dharma-jña — O knower of dharma [implying that Arjuna was fully conversant with the established protocol of behavior and respect due to his preceptors and their sons (gurau guru-putreṣu vācāra-namana-lakṣaṇo yo dharmaḥ taṁ jānāti)169]; mahā-bhāga — O most fortunate one [who are blessed with the fortune of not disrespecting your teachers (gurv-apamāna-rāhitya-rūpa-mahā-bhāgya-yukta);170 or with the competence to be able to serve your teachers (gurūṇāṁ sevā-karaṇa-sāmarthyaṁ bhavati)171]; kulam — the family; gauravam — of your preceptor [guroḥ kulam]; na arhati — does not deserve; prāptum — to receive [or to be administered (prāpayitum)172]; vṛjinam — persecution [misery (duḥkham)]; bhavadbhiḥ — by you [through your agency (kartṛbhiḥ)]; [rather (kintu)]; abhīkṣṇaśaḥ — [it is] ever [(sarvadā);173 or repeatedly (punaḥ punaḥ)174]; pūjyam — worthy of worship; vandyam — [and] veneration.
Translation
Therefore, O knower of dharma, O most fortunate one, the family of your guru does not deserve to be persecuted at your hands; rather, it is ever worthy of worship and veneration.
