SB 1.6.9

एकदा निर्गतां गेहाद्दुहन्तीं निशि गां पथि ।
सर्पोऽदशत्पदा स्पृष्टः कृपणां कालचोदितः ॥ ९ ॥
ekadā nirgatāṁ gehād duhantīṁ niśi gāṁ pathi
sarpo’daśat padā spṛṣṭaḥ kṛpaṇāṁ kāla-coditaḥ

Synonyms

ekadā — once; niśi — at night [rātrau32]; nirgatām — [my mother] went out; gehāt — from the house [gṛhāt33]; duhantīm — to milk [dogdhum]; gām — the cow; pathi — on the path [mārge34]; sarpaḥ — a snake; kāla-coditaḥ — impelled by time or the will of providence [impelled by the will of providence in the form of time (kāla-śarīrakeṇa daivena-coditaḥ);35 or impelled by Bhagavān in the form of all-devouring time (bhagavat-preritena sarva-mārakeṇa coditaḥ preritaḥ)36]; spṛṣṭaḥ — was touched [or lightly stepped on (āspṛṣṭaḥ īṣad ākrāntaḥ)]; padā — by her foot [pādena]; adaśat — [and] bit [akhādat]; kṛpaṇām — the helpless woman [(anāthām);37 resulting in her death (tena ca sā mṛtety arthāj jñeyam)38].

Translation

One night, my mother left the house to milk the cow. On the path, a snake, impelled by the will of providence, was touched by her foot and bit the helpless woman [resulting in her death].
