SB 1.6.38

सूत उवाच
एवं सम्भाष्य भगवान्नारदो वासवीसुतम् ।
आमन्त्र्य वीणां रणयन्ययौ यादृच्छिको मुनिः ॥ ३८ ॥
sūta uvāca
evaṁ sambhāṣya bhagavān nārado vāsavī-sutam
āmantrya vīṇāṁ raṇayan yayau yādṛcchiko muniḥ

Synonyms

sūtaḥ — Śrī Sūta; uvāca — said; sambhāṣya — having conversed [kathayitvā179]; evam — in this manner; vāsavī-sutam — [with] the son of Vāsavī [Satyavatī]; bhagavān — the illustrious; nāradaḥ — sage Nārada; āmantrya — took his leave [anujñāpya180]; raṇayan — [and] while vibrating [or playing (vādayan)181]; vīṇām — his vīṇā; yayau — he departed; yādṛcchikaḥ — having no purpose of his own to fulfill [(sva-prayojana-saṅkalpa-śūnyaḥ);182 doing so out of his own independent will (svecchānucārī);183 meaning that his actions of going and so on are devoid of phenomenal cause (hetu-śūnya gamanādi-kriya ity arthaḥ), from which it is understood that bhakti, the bhakta, and Nārada’s association with Vyāsa are all self-impelled (tena ca bhaktir yādṛcchikī bhakto’pi yādṛcchikas tat-saṅgo’pi vyāsasya yādṛcchikaḥ)184].

Translation

Śrī Sūta said: After conversing in this manner with the son of Satyavatī [Vyāsa], the illustrious sage Nārada took his leave, and while playing his vīṇā, he departed, having no purpose of his own to fulfill.
