मरीचिमिश्रा ऋषयः प्राणेभ्योऽहं च जज्ञिरे ॥ ३१ ॥
marīci-miśrā ṛṣayaḥ prāṇebhyo’haṁ ca jajñire
Synonyms
paryante — at the end; sahasra-yuga — [of] a thousand yugas [the word yuga here refers to a cycle of the four yugas, amounting to 4,320,000 years (yuga śabdo’tra catur-yuga-paraḥ)148]; [Brahmā]; utthāya — after waking up; sisṛkṣataḥ — desired to bring forth; idam — this world; [at that time (tadā)149]; aham — I; ca — and; ṛṣayaḥ — the sages; marīci-miśrāḥ — headed by Marīci [of whom Marīci was the chief (tan-mukhāḥ)150]; jajñire — were born [udbhūvuḥ151]; prāṇebhyaḥ — out of his life force [via his sense faculties (indriyebhyaḥ)].
Translation
At the end of one thousand cycles of the four yugas, [Brahmā,] after waking up, desired to bring forth this world. At that time, I and the sages headed by Marīci were born out of his life force.
