अहं च तस्मै महतां महीयसे शीर्ष्णावनामं विदधेऽनुकम्पितः ॥ २६ ॥
bhūtaṁ nabho-liṅgam aliṅgam īśvaram
ahaṁ ca tasmai mahatāṁ mahīyase
śīrṣṇāvanāmaṁ vidadhe’nukampitaḥ
Synonyms
uktvā — having spoken; etāvat — thus; tat — that [renowned (prasiddham)111]; mahat-bhūtam — Infinite Being [the all-pervading Brahman (mahad-vyāpakaṁ brahma);112 referred to as such in the well-known Śruti verse: “The Ṛg Veda and so on are all emanations from the breathing of the Infinite Being” (asya mahato bhūtasya niśvasitam etad yad ṛg-veda ityādi śruteḥ, BAU 2.4.10)]; īśvaram — Īśvara, the Supreme Immanent Regulator of all [sarva-niyantṛ]; aliṅgam — who is without material or visible form [(prākṛta-mūrti-rahitam);113 who, although immediately present, is without any visible sign (sannihito’pi na liṅgyate ity aliṅgam), because He is beyond the range of perception (cakṣurbhyām adṛṣṭatvād aliṅgam)114]; nabhaḥ-liṅgam — yet who is signified by limitless space [whose indicator is indeed space (ākāśa eva liṅgam chihnam);115 or whose extrinsic form is space (nabhasi liṅgaṁ mūrtir yasya tan nabho liṅgam)]; upararāma — desisted from speaking [became silent (tūṣṇīm āsa)116]; [thereupon (tataḥ)117]; anukampitaḥ — being blessed [by Him (tenānugṛhītaḥ)]; aham ca — I; vidadhe — offered [or performed (kṛtavān)]; avanāmam — obeisance [praṇāmam]; tasmai — to Him [the imperceptible One (adṛṣṭāya)]; mahīyase — the greatest [(mahattamāya) or the most worshipful (pūjyatamāya)118]; mahatām — of the great [even of all those endowed with extraordinary power (tejasvinām api);119 even of greatly powerful beings such as Brahmā (brahmādīnām api)120]; śīrṣṇā — by [bowing] my head [mastakena121].
Translation
Having spoken thus, that Infinite Being, the Supreme Immanent Regulator of all (Īśvara), who is without a visible form, yet who is signified by limitless space, desisted from speaking. Thereupon, being blessed by Him, I offered obeisance to Him, the greatest of the great, by bowing my head.
