औत्कण्ठ्याश्रुकलाक्षस्य हृद्यासीन्मे शनैर्हरिः ॥ १७ ॥
autkaṇṭhyāśru-kalākṣasya hṛdy āsīn me śanair hariḥ
Synonyms
dhyāyataḥ — while meditating; caraṇa-ambhojam — on the lotus feet of Bhagavān; cetasā — through awareness [or mental attention (manasā)52]; nirjita — overwhelmed [or subjugated (vaśīkṛta)53]; bhāva — [by] devotional affect [by bhakti (bhaktyā);54 or by prema (prema-vaśīkṛtena)]; hariḥ — Bhagavān Hari [Śrī Kṛṣṇa]; āsīt — manifested [appeared of His own accord (svayam evāvirbhūtavān)55]; śanaiḥ — sequentially [stage by stage (krameṇa), meaning that first He drew near and then appeared directly to my cognizing awareness (āgatya, manasy eva … agre babhūva), or having first manifested in my heart, He then sequentially disclosed the wonderful fragrance of His limbs, the melodious sound of His anklets, and the beauty of His face, to my heart’s three cognitive capacities—the nose (internal smell), ears (internal audition), and eyes (internal sight)—so that they could be apprehended (prathamaṁ hṛdy āvirbabhūva, tato hṛd-vṛttiṣu tisṛṣu nāsikā śrotra cakṣuḥṣv api svāṅga-saurabhya nūpura-sausvarya śrī-mukha-saundarya grāhaṇārtham āvirbabhuva)]; me — [in] my [mama56]; hṛdi — heart; akṣasya — whose eyes [akṣiṇī yasya tasya]; aśru-kala — [were] filled with tears [(aśruṇi kalayato dhārayato); arising from ecstasy (ānanda-ja)57]; autkaṇṭhya — [due to] intense longing [utkaṇṭhyena].
Translation
While meditating on the lotus feet of Bhagavān through awareness overwhelmed by devotional affect, Bhagavān Hari [Śrī Kṛṣṇa] manifested sequentially in my heart, when my eyes were filled with tears of ecstasy due to intense longing.
