न तथा वासुदेवस्य महिमा ह्यनुवर्णितः ॥ ९ ॥
na tathā vāsudevasya mahimā hy anuvarṇitaḥ
Synonyms
muni-varya — O foremost of sages [here by this address, Nārada implies that because Vyāsa was preeminent among all contemplatives (manana-śīleṣu sreṣṭhatvāt), it was indeed inappropriate (ayuktam eva) for him to elaborate topics other than the glories of Bhagavān37]; mahimā — the glory; vāsudevasya — of Bhagavān Vāsudeva [Kṛṣṇa]; na hi anuvarṇitaḥ — has certainly not been extensively described; tathā — in the same primary manner [(prādhānyena);38 as the ultimate object of human attainment (puruṣārthatvenāpi), although it is the crest jewel of all possible attainments (puruṣārtha-śiromaṇir api)39]; yathā — as; ca — even [the much inferior (ati-nikṛṣṭā api)40]; arthāḥ — four goals of human life [puruṣārthāḥ41]; dharma-ādayaḥ — [namely,] conventional religious duty, prosperity, fulfillment of desire, and liberation [(dharmārtha-kāma-mokṣākhyāḥ);42 as well as the means of their attainment (ca śabdād dharmādi-sādhanāni ca)43]; anukīrtitāḥ — have been repeatedly proclaimed.
Translation
O foremost of sages, you have certainly not extensively described the glory of Bhagavān Vāsudeva [Kṛṣṇa] in the same primary manner as you have repeatedly proclaimed even the four [inferior] goals of human life [puruṣārthas], namely, conventional religious duty (dharma), prosperity (artha), fulfillment of desire (kāma), and liberation (mokṣa) [as well as the means of their attainment (tat-sādhanāni)].
