jugupsitaṁ dharma-kṛte’nuśāsataḥ
svabhāva-raktasya mahān vyatikramaḥ
yad-vākyato dharma itītaraḥ sthito
na manyate tasya nivāraṇaṁ janaḥ

Synonyms

[it was (syāt)58]; mahān — a great; vyatikramaḥ — impropriety [the injustice of overstepping the import of the Vedas (veda-tātparya-laṅghanenānyāyaḥ)]; [on your part (bhavataḥ)]; anuśāsataḥ — to prescribe [to repeatedly instruct (nirantaram eva upadiśataḥ)]; jugupsitam — reprehensible [blameworthy motivated actions (nindyaṁ kāmyaṁ karmādi)]; dharma-kṛte — in the name of religion [as amounting or equivalent to bhāgavata-dharma itself (bhāgavad-dharmam eva tatra paryavasāyitum)]; svabhāva-raktasya — for people who are already naturally predisposed to such actions [who are instinctively prone to desire due to the beginningless sublatent predisposition toward sense objects (anādi-viṣaya-vāsanayā svabhāvata eva kāmanā-parasya puruṣasya)]; [and why is that? (kuta iti)59]; [because (ata āha)]; yat-vākyataḥ — on the strength of whose [i.e., your] instructions; itaraḥ — the common [materialistic (prākṛtaḥ)]; janaḥ — person; sthitaḥ — having determined; dharmaḥ iti — this alone as primary dharma [ayam eva mukhyo dharma iti]; na manyate — will not heed; nivāraṇam — any prohibition [stipulated either by some other knower of the truth or even by you yourself (anyena tattvajñena kriyamāṇaṁ nivāraṇaṁ svayam eva vā kriyamāṇam)]; tasya — of that [of motivated action and so on (kāmya-karmādeḥ)].

Translation

It was a great impropriety on your part to prescribe reprehensible actions in the name of religion for people who are already naturally predisposed to such actions. On the strength of your instructions, the common person, having determined this alone as primary dharma, will not heed any prohibition of such motivated actions.
