Synonyms

[Such a vast narration would require staying in one location for a prolonged period, but it was rare for Śuka to remain for long in a single place. This is now expressed in the present verse (etad vyākhyānaṁ bahu kālāvasthānāpekṣaṁ tasya tv ekatrāvasthānaṁ durlabham ity āha sa iti).29]; tīrthī-kurvan — just to sanctify [pavitrī-kurvan]; tat-āśramam — their residences [(teṣāṁ gṛham), and not for the purpose of begging alms (na bhikṣārtham)]; saḥ — he [that paramount enlightened being, Śuka (mahā-yogī śukaḥ)30]; mahā-bhāgaḥ — the most exalted sage [being blessed from birth with complete realization, detachment, and devotion (janmata eva jñāna-vairāgya-bhaktyādi-paripūrṇaḥ)31]; avekṣate — waits [pratīkṣate]; gṛheṣu — outside the houses; gṛha-medhinām — of the householders; go-dohana-mātram hi — only as long as it takes to milk a cow [and not a moment longer (na tv adhikam) due to his detachment (viraktatvāt)32]; [consequently, the fact that Śuka, who was of such nature, could be the speaker of the Bhāgavata is truly astonishing (tasmād evam-bhūto’tra vaktety āścaryam)].

Translation

Just to sanctify their residences, that most exalted sage [Śuka] waits outside the houses of the householders only as long as it takes to milk a cow.
