असम्पन्न इवाभाति ब्रह्मवर्चस्य सत्तमः ॥ ३० ॥
asampanna ivābhāti brahma-varcasya sattamaḥ
Synonyms
bata — alas; tathāpi — in spite of all this [(athāpi evaṁ sati);121 even after having disclosed the meaning of the Vedas via the Mahābhārata (bhārata-kṛtya āmnāyārtha-pradarśanānantaram api);122 and executed dharma in the manner described (tasmād evaṁ dharmācaraṇāt)123]; me — my [mama124]; ātmā — authentic self [pratyag ātmā125]; daihyaḥ — present within the body [(deha-sthaḥ);126 (dehe bhavaḥ)127]; vibhuḥ eva hi — [which is] in reality certainly complete [(vastutaḥ paripūrṇa eva); being replete with austerity, wisdom, and so on (tapo-jñānādibhiḥ paripūrṇaḥ)128]; ātmanā129 — by its very essential nature [svarūpeṇa130]; ca — and; sattamaḥ — preeminent among all sādhus [sādhavaḥ teṣu ati-śreṣṭhaḥ]; brahma-varcasya — endowed with the luster of Vedic wisdom [with the luster derived from the eminence of studying and teaching the Vedas (brahmaṇaḥ vedasya śravaṇa-adhyāpana-utkarṣajaṁ tejaḥ)]; ābhāti — appears; asampannaḥ iva— as though incomplete [apūrṇa iva131].
Translation
Alas! In spite of all this, my authentic self, present within the body, which is in reality certainly complete by its very essential nature and preeminent among all sādhus endowed with the luster of Vedic wisdom, appears as though incomplete.
