जीवन्ति नात्मार्थमसौ पराश्रयं मुमोच निर्विद्य कुतः कलेवरम् ॥ १२ ॥
ya uttama-śloka-parāyaṇā janāḥ
jīvanti nātmārtham asau parāśrayaṁ
mumoca nirvidya kutaḥ kalevaram
Synonyms
ye — those; janāḥ — people; uttama-śloka-parāyaṇāḥ — [who are] exclusively devoted to Uttamaśloka, Śrī Kṛṣṇa; jīvanti — live; śivāya — for the happiness [sukhāya51]; bhavāya — for the well-being [samṛddhyai]; bhūtaye — [and] for the prosperity [aiśvaryāya]; lokasya — of the world; na ātma-artham — [but] not for their own self-interest [na sva-prayojanārtham52]; [such being the case (evaṁ sati)]; kutaḥ — why [for what reason (kuto hetoḥ)]; [did]; asau — he [the king (rājā)]; nirvidya — though indifferent to worldly pursuits [virajya api]; mumoca — give up [tatyāja53]; kalevaram — [his] body; para-āśrayam — [which was] a source of refuge for others; [implying that to give up his own life would not at all be conducive to the support of others (na hi paropajīvanaṁ svayaṁ tyaktum ucitam ity arthaḥ)].
Translation
Those people who are exclusively devoted to Uttamaśloka, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, live for the happiness, well-being, and prosperity of the world, but not for their own self-interest. Such being the case, why did he [the king], though indifferent to worldly pursuits, give up his body, which was a source of refuge for others?
