भूत्वात्मोपशमोपेतमकरोद्दुश्चरं तपः ॥ ९ ॥
bhūtvātmopaśamopetam akarod duścaraṁ tapaḥ

turye — in the fourth advent [caturthe avatāre46]; sarge — taking birth [(jāte);47 or appearing (prādurbhāve)]; kalā — [from] the devoted wife [(bhāryaḥ), named Mūrti]; dharma — [of] Dharmarāja; bhūtvā — [the Puruṣa] assumed the form of [lit., “became”]; ṛṣī — the twin sages; nara-nārāyaṇau — Nara and Nārāyaṇa; akarot — [and] undertook; duścaram — severe; tapaḥ — austerity [impossible to be performed by others (itaraiś cartum aśakyam)48]; upetam — endowed with [yuktam49]; upaśama — perfect mastery [(adhika-śāntyā);50 restraint (nigrahaḥ);51 or pacification (śāntiḥ)52]; ātma — of the self [of the entire psyche (antaḥ-karaṇasya);53 or of the sense faculties (indriyasya)54].
Translation
In the fourth advent, taking birth from [Mūrti], the devoted wife of Dharmarāja, the Puruṣa assumed the form of the twin sages, Nara and Nārāyaṇa, and undertook severe austerity endowed with perfect mastery of the self.
