सर्ववेदेतिहासानां सारं सारं समुद्धृतम् ॥ ४१ ॥
sarva-vedetihāsānāṁ sāraṁ sāraṁ samuddhṛtam
Synonyms
tat — thereafter [in due course (sampradāya pravṛttim āha)189]; [Vyāsa, out of affection (snehena)190]; grāhayāmāsa — imparted; idam — this [Mahāpurāṇa;191 Śrīmad Bhāgavata192]; sāram sāram — [which is] the condensed essence; samuddhṛtam — extracted; sarva-veda — [from] all of the Vedas; itihāsānām — [and] the Epics; [like fresh butter obtained by churning a pot of yogurt (dadhi-manthanād udbhūtaṁ navanītam iva)193]; sutam — to his son [Śrī Śukadeva, the guru of the Brahman-realized sages (brahmānubhavi-gurum)194]; varam — the foremost [śreṣṭam195]; ātmavatām — of all those established in immediate realization of the Self [sarva-jñānināṁ madhye196].
Translation
Thereafter, Vyāsa imparted this Mahāpurāṇa, Śrīmad Bhāgavata, which is the condensed essence extracted from all of the Vedas and Itihāsas, to his son [Śrī Śukadeva], the foremost of all those established in immediate realization of the Self.
