उत्तमश्लोकचरितं चकार भगवानृषिः ।
निःश्रेयसाय लोकस्य धन्यं स्वस्त्ययनं महत् ॥ ४० ॥
uttama-śloka-caritaṁ cakāra bhagavān ṛṣiḥ
niḥśreyasāya lokasya dhanyaṁ svasty-ayanaṁ mahat
Synonyms
niḥśreyasāya — for the highest benefit; lokasya — of humanity; bhagavān — the divine; ṛṣiḥ — seer [of all the Vedas, Vyāsa (sarva-nigama-draṣṭā vyāsaḥ)186]; cakāra — brought forth into being; idam — this; purāṇam — Purāṇa; nāma — called; bhāgavatam — Śrīmad Bhāgavata; brahma-sammitam — which is equal to all the Vedas [(sarva-veda-tulyam);187 or which is identical to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who is the Supreme Brahman in human form (narākṛti-para-brahmaṇā śrī-kṛṣṇena tulyam)188]; uttama-śloka-caritam — which is filled with the narrations of Uttamaśloka, Śrī Kṛṣṇa; dhanyam — which bestows all aspired for aims [sarva-puruṣārtha-āvaham]; svasti-ayanam — which is productive of the highest well-being [sarva-maṅgala-āvaham]; mahat — [and] is supremely preeminent [sarvataḥ śreṣṭaṁ ca].
Translation
For the highest benefit of humanity, the divine seer [Vyāsadeva] brought forth into being this Purāṇa called Śrīmad Bhāgavata, which is equal to all the Vedas, which is filled with the narrations of Uttamaśloka, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, which bestows all aspired for aims, which is productive of the highest well-being, and is supremely preeminent.
