सम्पन्न एवेति विदुर्महिम्नि स्वे महीयते ॥ ३४ ॥
sampanna eveti vidur mahimni sve mahīyate
Synonyms
[Sūta now describes the liberated state fundamentally characterized by the immediate perception of Brahman (athāntimāṁ brahma-sākṣātkāra-lakṣaṇāṁ muktim āha yadīti).157]; yadi — if; eṣā — this [pertaining to the living liberated condition (jīvan-mukti-daśāyāṁ sthitā)]; devī — illuminating [dyotamānā]; matiḥ — knowledge [vidyā]; māyā — which is a functional capacity of the sāttvika aspect of māyā [(sattvamayī māyā-vṛtti), characterized as the doorway leading to the self-disclosure of the wisdom faculty that belongs directly to the intrinsic potency (svarūpa-śakti-vṛtti-bhūta-vidyāvirbhāva-dvāra-lakṣaṇā)]; vaiśāradī — accorded by the Supreme Immanent Self [viśāradenaparameśvareṇa dattā]; uparatā — is withdrawn [nivṛttā bhavati]; [then (tadā), due to the absence of even a trace of obstruction (vyavadhānābhāsasyāpi rāhityāt)]; sampannaḥ eva — one certainly attains complete fulfillment [(sampanno labdhaḥ), the wealth of the Absolute’s supreme transcendental bliss (paramānanda-sampattir eva)]; iti viduḥ — as attested to by self-realized sages [munayaḥ]; [thereupon (tataś ca), as a consequence of the attainment of the wealth of Brahman-realization (tat-sampatti-lābhāt)]; mahīyate — one also becomes esteemed [(pūjyate), preeminently illuminated or established (prakṛṣṭa-prakāśo bhavati)]; sve mahimni — in the glory of one’s own essential being [svarūpa-sampattāv api].
Translation
If this illuminating knowledge [vidyā], which is a functional capacity of the sāttvika aspect of māyā accorded by the Supreme Immanent Self, is withdrawn, then one certainly attains complete fulfillment [the wealth of Brahman-realization (brahma-sampatti)], as attested to by self-realized sages. Thereupon, one also becomes preeminently established in the glory of one’s own essential being [svarūpa-sampatti].158
Synonyms
yadi — if [here, the word yadi, expressing uncertainty, is used in the sense of doubtlessness, as in the statement, “if the Vedas are authoritative” (asaṁdehe saṁdeha-vacanaṁ yadi vedāḥ pramāṇaṁ syur iti-vat)159]; eṣā — this; māyā — deluding potency; vaiśāradī — which belongs to the Omniscient Immanent Self (Īśvara) [viśāradaḥ sarvajña īśvaraḥ tadīyā]; devī — [and] which is involved in the play of cyclic existence [saṁsāra-cakreṇa krīḍanti]; uparatā — is withdrawn; matiḥ — [by its being transformed into] transcendental knowledge [(saiva vidyā rūpeṇa pariṇatā), which extinguishes the jīva’s upādhis in the form of the gross and subtle bodies (sad-asad-rūpaṁ jīvopādhiṁ dagdhvā), as fire is automatically extinguished when deprived of fuel (nirindhanāgnivat svayam evoparamet)]; [then (tadā)]; sampannaḥ eva — one certainly becomes established [in the essential nature of Brahman (brahma-svarūpaṁ prāptaḥ)]; iti viduḥ — as attested to by those who have realized the truth [tattva-jñāḥ]; [thereupon (ataḥ)]; mahīyate — one is esteemed [or eminently abides (pūjyate virājate)]; sve mahimni — in the glory of one’s authentic self [in one’s own essential being that is of the nature of supreme bliss (paramānanda-svarūpe)].
Translation
If this māyā, which belongs to the Omniscient Immanent Self (Īśvara) and which is involved in the play of cyclic existence, is withdrawn by its being transformed into transcendental knowledge, then one certainly becomes established in the essential nature of Brahman, as attested to by those who have realized the truth. Thereupon, one eminently abides in the glory of one’s own authentic self.
