नाव्यारोप्य महीमय्यामपाद्वैवस्वतं मनुम् ॥ १५ ॥
nāvy āropya mahī-mayyām apād vaivasvataṁ manum
Synonyms
[in the tenth advent (daśamaṁ rūpam)72]; saḥ — He [the Puruṣa]; jagṛhe — assumed; rūpam — the form; mātsyam — [of] a divine fish, Matsyadeva; apāt — [and] protected [rakṣitavān73]; vaivasvatam — Vaivasvata; manum — Manu; āropya — [by] placing [him]; nāvi — on a boat; mahī-mayyām — in the form of the earth [(pṛthvī-rūpāyām);74 i.e., by placing him on the earth transformed into a boat (naukā-rūpeṇa jātāyāṁ mahyām);75 meaning, rather, that the Earth Goddess herself became a boat (naur bhūtvā tu mahī devī)76]; samplave — during the deluge; udadhi — [of] the ocean; cākṣuṣa — [in] the Cākṣuṣa manvantara.
Translation
[In the tenth advent,] He [the Puruṣa] assumed the form of a divine fish, Matsyadeva, and protected Vaivasvata Manu by placing him on a boat in the form of the earth during the oceanic deluge in the Cākṣuṣa manvantara.
