दुग्धेमामोषधीर्विप्रास्तेनायं स उशत्तमः ॥ १४ ॥
dugdhemām oṣadhīr viprās tenāyaṁ sa uśattamaḥ
Synonyms
yācitaḥ — being petitioned [for the protection of the world (jagad-pālanā-rtham)68]; ṛṣibhiḥ — by the sages [who had brought about Vena’s death (venaṁ hata-vadbhiḥ)]; [the Puruṣa]; bheje — accepted [prāptaḥ]; navamam — the ninth advent [avatāram69]; vapuḥ — [in] the form; pārthivam — [of] a king [lit., “a lord of the earth,” as King Pṛthu (rāja-dehaṁ pṛthu-rūpam)70]; saḥ — he; dugdha — milked; imām — this [earth (pṛthvīm), which had assumed the form of a cow (go-rūpam)71]; oṣadhīḥ — [for its] food, herbs, and medicinal plants [here the word oṣadhīḥ, lit., “herbs or plants,” stands for all earthly products (sarvāṇi vastūni), by taking the part as representative of the whole (upalakṣaṇa)]; tena — [and] by such action; viprāḥ — O brāhmaṇas; ayam — this [avatāraḥ]; uśattamaḥ — [became] exceedingly dear [kamanīyatamaḥ].
Translation
Being petitioned by the sages, the Puruṣa accepted the ninth avatāra in the form of King Pṛthu. He milked the earth for its food, herbs, and medicinal plants, and by such action, O brāhmaṇas, this avatāra became exceedingly dear.
