नानेव भाति विश्वात्मा भूतेषु च तथा पुमान् ॥ ३२ ॥
nāneva bhāti viśvātmā bhūteṣu ca tathā pumān
Synonyms
yathā — just as; ekaḥ vahniḥ hi — one and the same [substance, known as] fire; avahitaḥ — is inherent [nihitaḥ145]; dāruṣu — in innumerable pieces of wood [kāṣṭheṣu146]; sva-yoniṣu — [that are] the natural sources of its manifestation [svābhivyañjakeṣu]; bhāti — [yet] it appears; nānā iva — as though many [as though differentiated because of the differences in the wood out of which it appears (kāṣṭha-bhedena bhinna iva)147]; tathā ca — so too; pumān — the one Supreme Omnipotent Being [Parameśvara]; viśva-ātmā — [who is] the Self of the Cosmos [antaryāmī]; [is immanent (avahitaḥ)]; bhūteṣu — in all living beings; [yet He appears as though a multiplicity (nānā iva bhāti, nānātvam iva) because of the manifoldness of the individuated beings in whom He abides (pratiyogi nānātvena)].148
Translation
Just as one and the same substance, known as fire, inheres in innumerable pieces of wood that are the natural sources of its manifestation, yet it appears as though many [because of the differences in the wood out of which it appears], so too, the one Supreme Omnipotent Being, who is the Self of the Cosmos, is immanent in all living beings, yet He appears as though a multiplicity [because of the manifoldness of the individuated beings in whom He abides].
