स्वनिर्मितेषु निर्विष्टो भुङ्क्ते भूतेषु तद्गुणान् ॥ ३३ ॥
sva-nirmiteṣu nirviṣṭo bhuṅkte bhūteṣu tad-guṇān
Synonyms
nirviṣṭaḥ — having entered [praviṣṭaḥ149]; bhūteṣu — within the various grades of material bodies [such as those of the devas, human beings, and lower life forms (deva-tiryag-ādiṣu)]; sva-nirmiteṣu — which were generated by Him [by Bhagavān (bhagavatā nirmiteṣu)150]; bhāvaiḥ — out of the substances [(padārthaiḥ);151 meaning the effects of the guṇas (guṇa-kārya-bhūtaiḥ)152]; guṇa-mayaiḥ — evolved from the three guṇas of material nature [beginning with sattva (sattvādi-guṇa-pariṇāma-rūpatvena)153]; bhūta-sūkṣma — [including] both the gross and subtle elements [the five gross elements (pañca-mahā-bhūtāni), earth, water, fire, air, and space (pṛthvy-ap-tejo-vāyv-ākāśa-rūpāṇi), and the subtle elements (sūkṣmāṇi), form, taste, smell, touch, and sound (rūpa-rasa-gandha-sparśa-śabdātmakāni)154]; indriya — the senses; ātmabhiḥ — [and] the mind [(manaḥ); or the internal organ (antaḥkaraṇam)155]; asau — He [the Supreme Immanent Self of the Cosmos (viśvātmā)]; bhuṅkte — experiences [through the living beings and not personally (jīva-dvārā na tu svataḥ), since the word viśvātmā here implies a corresponding superior category of enjoyership and agency, namely, that of the impelling agent (atra viśvātmety ucyamānaṁ bhoktṛtvaṁ kartṛtvaṁ ca prayojaka-kartṛtvaṁ vivakṣitam)156]; tat-guṇān — the sense objects that are appropriate to those bodies [tat-tad-anurūpān-viṣayān157].
Translation
Having entered within the various grades of material bodies, which were generated by Him out of the substances evolved from the three guṇas of material nature, including both the gross and subtle elements, the senses, and the mind, He [the Supreme Immanent Self of the Cosmos (viśvātmā)] experiences the sense objects that are appropriate to those bodies.
