स्यान्महत्सेवया विप्राः पुण्यतीर्थनिषेवणात् ॥ १६ ॥
syān mahat-sevayā viprāḥ puṇya-tīrtha-niṣevaṇāt
Synonyms
[In response to the question, “And what should one do if attraction for such narrations does not come about?” Sūta responds as follows (nanu tathāpi tasyāṁ rucir notpadyate kiṁ kurmas tatrāha).59]; viprāḥ — O learned brāhmaṇas; niṣevaṇāt — by visiting, dwelling in, or attendance to; puṇya-tīrtha — a holy place [or to an authentic preceptor by taking shelter of his feet (sad-gurus tasya niṣevaṇaṁ caraṇāśrayaṇam)60]; mahat-sevayā — [and] by service to highly realized devotees; ruciḥ — attraction; kathā — [for] the narrations; vāsudeva — [of] the son of Vasudeva, Śrī Kṛṣṇa; syāt — comes about; śraddadhānasya — of [i.e., for] a person endowed with firm faith; śuśrūṣoḥ — who is eager to hear; [the sense is that by visiting a holy place (puṇya-tīrtha-niṣevaṇāt), one is freed from sins (niṣpāpasya) and attains the service of highly realized devotees (mahat-sevā). Then, by such service, faith (śraddhā) arises in their dharma. From this, the desire to hear is awakened (śravaṇecchā), which then gives rise to attraction (rucim).61].
Translation
O learned brāhmaṇas, by visiting, dwelling in, or attendance to, a holy place and by service to highly realized devotees, attraction for the narrations of Bhagavān Vāsudeva comes about for a person endowed with firm faith, who is eager to hear.
