न लक्ष्यते ह्यवस्थानमपि गोदोहनं क्वचित् ॥ ३९ ॥
na lakṣyate hy avasthānam api go-dohanaṁ kvacit
Synonyms
[“Because you are so rarely seen, please instruct me straight away” (tvad-darśanasyāti-durlabhatvād idānīm eva kathanīyam). With this intent, Parīkṣit speaks the following verse (ity āśayenāha nūnam iti).302]; brahman — O brāhmaṇa; nūnam — surely [niścito hi303]; bhagavataḥ — your [tava304]; avasthānam — abidance; gṛheṣu — in the houses; gṛha-medhinām — of those who are intent on family life [(gṛhāśramiṇām);305 or of those whose mental attention is rooted in the house (gṛhe medhā buddhir yeṣām), meaning those whose nature is geared exclusively toward world-centric social involvement (kevala pravṛtti-svabhāvānām)306]; kvacit na lakṣyate hi — is not at all seen; go-dohanam api — even for the brief time it takes to milk a cow [go-dohana-mātra kālam api307]; [therefore, out of compassion for me, please remain here enduringly (ato mad-anugrahārthaṁ sthiro bhava)308].
Translation
O brāhmaṇa, surely, you are not at all seen to abide in the houses of those who are intent on family life even for the brief time it takes to milk a cow.
