स्मर्तव्यं भजनीयं वा ब्रूहि यद्वा विपर्ययम् ॥ ३८ ॥
smartavyaṁ bhajanīyaṁ vā brūhi yad vā viparyayam
Synonyms
prabho — O master; brūhi — please inform [kathaya293]; [us (asmākam)294]; yat — [of] that which; kartavyam — is imperative to be undertaken [(āva-śyakam);295 the varieties of which are now being separately inquired about (kartavyam eva vibhajya pṛccham)]; nṛbhiḥ — by human beings; yat śrotavyam — what is to be heard [what is worthy to be heard (śravaṇārhaṁ kartavyam)296]; atho — [and] thereafter; yat japyam — what is to be uttered [what is worthy to be uttered (japārhaṁ kartavyam)297]; smartavyam — what is to be recollected [what is worthy to be recollected (smaraṇārhaṁ kartavyam);298 or contemplated (mantavyam)]; vā — and; bhajanīyam — who is to be worshiped [who is worthy of worship or service (bhajanārhaṁ kartavyam), or who, among the devas, is to be worshiped (kiṁ bhajanīyaṁ veti deveṣu madhye ka upāsya);299 or what is the ultimate object of worship (ārādhyam)300]; [by them]; yad vā — and on the contrary; viparyayam — what should they avoid [what should not be heard, uttered, recollected, or worshiped by them (aśrotavyādi)301].
Translation
O master, please inform us of that which is imperative to be undertaken by human beings. What is to be heard and, thereafter, what is to be uttered, what is to be recollected, and who is to be worshiped by them, and, on the contrary, what should they avoid?
