एवमाभाषितः पृष्टः स राज्ञा श्लक्ष्णया गिरा ।
प्रत्यभाषत धर्मज्ञो भगवान्बादरायणिः ॥ ४० ॥
evam ābhāṣitaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ sa rājñā ślakṣṇayā girā
pratyabhāṣata dharma-jño bhagavān bādarāyaṇiḥ
Synonyms
sūtaḥ — Śrī Sūta; uvāca — said; ābhāṣitaḥ — being addressed [or directly approached (abhimukhī-kṛtaḥ)309]; pṛṣṭaḥ — [and] questioned; rājñā — by the king; evam — in this manner [beginning from Parīkṣit’s opening statement in verse 32, “O brāhmaṇa, how blessed are we!” (aho ityādikayā)310]; ślakṣṇayā — [with] affectionate [(sneha-prakāśikayā);311 or pleasing (madhurayā)312]; girā — speech; saḥ — that; bhagavān — all-knowing [or omniscient due to his complete absorption in Bhagavān (bhagavad-āviṣṭaḥ sarvajñaḥ)313]; bādarāyaṇiḥ — son of Vyāsa [Śrī Śuka314]; dharma-jñaḥ — who was fully conversant with the principles of dharma [particularly those concerning the essential duty for those seeking liberation or on the verge of death (mumukṣūṇāṁ mumūrṣūṇāṁ kartavya-dharma-yāthātmyābhijñaḥ);315 or fully conversant with the dharma of unalloyed devotion to Bhagavān Hari because of its preeminence among all forms of dharma (hari-bhakti-dharma-jñaḥ tasyaiva sarva-śreṣṭha-dharmatvāt)316]; pratyabhāṣata — replied to his questions [as follows, beginning from the Second Canto (praśnānām uttarāṇy uvācety arthaḥ)317].
Translation
Śrī Sūta said: Being addressed and questioned by the king in this manner with affectionate speech, that all-knowing son of Vyāsa [Śrī Śuka], who was fully conversant with the principles of dharma, replied to his questions as follows.
