yathā — like [tat-tulyāḥ171]; vedāḥ — the Vedas; mūrti-dharāḥ [bhavanti] — [who assume] personified forms; tri-pṛṣṭhe — in Satyaloka [which is situated above the three worlds (trāyāṇāṁ lokānāṁ pṛṣṭhe upari satya-loke)]; sarve — all of you [yūyaṁ sarve172]; samāgatāḥ — have assembled here [in person (avabhāsamānāḥ)173]; sarvataḥ eva — from all directions [sarvābhyo digbhya eva174]; [having thus pointed out the sages’ extraordinary endowment with wisdom, Parīkṣit now speaks of their compassion (jñānātiśayaṁ uktvā kṛpālutām āha neti)]; na iha — neither in this world [loke175]; atha na amutra ca — nor in the next [in heaven (svargādi-loke)176]; [do you have (bhavatām)]; kaścana — any [kaścid api177]; arthaḥ — aim [prayojanam]; ṛte — other than [vinā]; para-anugraham — bestowing mercy upon others [like me (mādṛśeṣu)178]; ātma-śīlam — [for that is your] innate disposition [(sva-svabhāvam); meaning that it is not dependent on or the result of prior deliberation (na vicāra-pūrvakam)179]; [consequently, let that aim alone now come to pass (tarhi sa evārthaḥ syāt)].
Translation
Like the Vedas, who assume personified forms in Satyaloka, all of you have assembled here in person from all directions. You have no aim, either in this world or in the next, other than bestowing mercy upon others [like me], for that is your innate disposition.
