SB 1.19.24
सर्वात्मना म्रियमाणैश्च कृत्यं शुद्धं च तत्रामृशताभियुक्ताः ॥ २४ ॥
viśrabhya viprā iti-kṛtyatāyām
sarvātmanā mriyamāṇaiś ca kṛtyaṁ
śuddhaṁ ca tatrāmṛśatābhiyuktāḥ
Synonyms
tataḥ ca — therefore; viprāḥ — O brāhmaṇas; viśrabhya — placing complete trust [viśvāsaṁ kṛtvā180]; vaḥ — in you [yuṣmān181]; vipṛcche — I ask [you]; imam — [about] that; pṛcchyam — [which alone is] worthy of inquiry [praṣṭavyam]; iti-kṛtyatāyām — in the matter of ultimate duty [here, the words iti-kṛtya literally mean, “such is to be done” (evaṁ kartavyam), i.e., “such is duty,” and the suffix-tā signifies the existential condition whereby a particular undertaking meets the criteria of being such ultimate duty (asya bhāvaḥ), the inquiry here is specifically in this regard (tasmin viṣaye)182]; [since all of you (yūyam)183]; tatra abhiyuktāḥ — are highly realized in respect to the following question [since you are adept in the matter of the critical examination that pertains to the following question (tad-vimarśanābhimukhya-yuktāḥ santo);184 or because you are omniscient (yato bhavanto’bhiyuktāḥ sarvajñāḥ)185]; āmṛśata — please deliberate [vicārayata]; [and then instruct me (ājñāpayata);186 (upadiśata)187]; kṛtyam — [as to] the essential duty to be undertaken; sarva-ātmanā — by everyone [in all situations (sarvāvasthāsu); or by all means (sarva-prakāreṇa)188]; ca — and [particularly (viśeṣataś ca)]; mriyamāṇaiḥ — by those on the verge of death [mumūrṣubhir janaiḥ189]; ca — and; śuddham — [which is] pristine in nature [bereft of contact with all improprieties (pāpa-samparka-rahitam); or foremost among all possible undertakings (sarvottamam), devoid of mixture with spiritual practices that are geared toward beginning and intermediate level practitioners (kaniṣṭha madhyama sādhana-miśratā rahitam)190].
Translation
Therefore, O brāhmaṇas, placing complete trust in you, I ask you about that which alone is worthy of inquiry in the matter of ultimate duty. Since all of you are highly realized in respect to the following question, please deliberate and then instruct me as to the essential duty to be undertaken by everyone in all situations and particularly by those on the verge of death, and which is pristine in nature.
