SB 1.19.17

इति स्म राजाध्यवसाययुक्तः प्राचीनमूलेषु कुशेषु धीरः ।
उदङ्मुखो दक्षिणकूल आस्ते समुद्रपत्न्याः स्वसुतन्यस्तभारः ॥ १७ ॥
iti sma rājādhyavasāya-yuktaḥ
prācīna-mūleṣu kuśeṣu dhīraḥ
udaṅ-mukho dakṣiṇa-kūla āste
samudra-patnyāḥ sva-suta-nyasta-bhāraḥ

Synonyms

yuktaḥ — having fixed; adhyavasāya — [his] resolve [niścayaḥ132]; iti — in this manner [ittham133]; rājā — the king; nyasta — entrusted [nihitaḥ134]; bhāraḥ — the responsibility [of his kingdom (rājyam)]; sva-suta — to his son [Janamejaya]; [then]; udaṅ-mukhaḥ — facing north; dhīraḥ — the serene king [due to his absence of concern about his imminent death (mṛtyu-cintā-rahitatvād dhīraḥ);135 or because he was devoid of fear of Takṣaka (takṣakādi-kṛta-bhayābhāvāyāha dhīra iti)136]; āste sma — sat down [upaviṣṭavān137]; dakṣiṇa-kūle — on the southern bank [dakṣiṇa-tīre138]; samudra-patnyāḥ — of the Gaṅgā [the wife of the presiding deity of the oceans]; kuśeṣu — on the protruding tips of kuśa grass [agreṣu kuśeṣu]; prācīna-mūleṣu — with their roots inclined toward the east.

Translation

Having fixed his resolve in this manner, the king entrusted the responsibility of his kingdom to his son [Janamejaya]. Then, facing north, the serene king sat down on the southern bank of the Gaṅgā on the protruding tips of kuśa grass with their roots inclined toward the east.
