यावदीशो महानुर्व्यामाभिमन्यव एकराट् ॥ ५ ॥
yāvad īśo mahān urvyām ābhimanyava eka-rāṭ
Synonyms
yāvat — as long as [yāvantaṁ kālam29]; mahān — the illustrious [he who was exalted by Bhagavān (bhagavat-sampāditotkarṣavān)30]; ābhimanyavaḥ — son of Abhimanyu [Parīkṣit (abhimanyoḥ putraḥ parīkṣit)31]; [remained (babhūva)32]; eka-rāṭ — the emperor [cakravartī33]; īśaḥ — [and] supreme guardian [(patiḥ);34 sovereign (adhipatiḥ); and regulator of the populace (prajā-niyantā)35]; urvyām — over the earth; tāvat — for that long [tāvantaṁ kālam36]; kaliḥ — Kali; na prabhavet — could not extend his influence [(sva-śakti-prakaṭana samartho nābhūt);37 because his power had not yet arisen over those places, even though granted by Parīkṣit (dattānām api teṣāṁ sthānānāṁ tat-prabhāvenānudbhavāt)38]; api — even though; praviṣṭaḥ — he had entered; sarvataḥ — everywhere; iha — throughout the world [loke].
Translation
As long as the illustrious son of Abhimanyu [Parīkṣit] remained the emperor and supreme guardian over the earth, Kali could not extend his influence, even though he had entered everywhere throughout the world.
