SB 1.18.46
साक्षान्महाभागवतो राजर्षिर्हयमेधयाट् ।
क्षुत्तृट्श्रमयुतो दीनो नैवास्मच्छापमर्हति ॥ ४६ ॥
sākṣān mahā-bhāgavato rājarṣir haya-medhayāṭ
kṣut-tṛṭ-śrama-yuto dīno naivāsmac chāpam arhati
Synonyms
saḥ — this; nara-patiḥ — king [Parīkṣit365]; dharma-pālaḥ — [is] the protector of righteousness; tu — [and] moreover [the word tu, indicating contrast, is used here to distinguish Parīkṣit from other kings (tu śabdenānya-rājabhyo’sya vailakṣaṇyaṁ sūcitam)366]; samrāṭ — the emperor himself [sārvabhaumaś ca367]; bṛhat-śravāḥ — of wide renown [viśrutaḥ vipula-kīrtiḥ368]; sākṣāt — [who is] evidently; mahā-bhāgavataḥ — a superlative devotee of Bhagavān; rāja-ṛṣiḥ — a royal sage [meaning that although he was situated in the royal order, he conducted himself without attachment to sense objects in the manner of a sage (rājye sthito’pi ṛṣi-vad viṣayānāsaktatayā vartamānaḥ)369]; haya-medhayāṭ — [and] a performer of horse sacrifices [(aśvamedha-yājī);370 indicating his greatness in regard to his comportment or conduct as well (vyavahārato’pi mahān ity āha)371]; dīnaḥ — [being then] in a miserable condition; śrama-yutaḥ — exhausted and afflicted [śramānvitatvena372]; kṣut — [by] hunger; tṛṭ — [and] thirst; [when he arrived at our hermitage and deserved to be honorably received with water and other suitable items (asmad āśramāgato’rghyādi-pūjā-yogyaḥ)373]; na eva arhati — [he] was not at all deserving; asmat — [of] our; śāpam — curse.
Translation
This king [Parīkṣit] is the protector of dharma and, moreover, the emperor himself of wide renown, who is evidently a superlative devotee of Bhagavān, a royal sage, and a performer of horse sacrifices. Being then in a miserable condition, exhausted and afflicted by hunger and thirst, he was not at all deserving of our curse.
