पापं कृतं तद्भगवान्सर्वात्मा क्षन्तुमर्हति ॥ ४७ ॥
pāpaṁ kṛtaṁ tad bhagavān sarvātmā kṣantum arhati
Synonyms
arhati — it behooves; bhagavān — Bhagavān; sarva-ātmā — the Immanent Self of all living beings [(sarvāntarātmā), implying that He is situated equally as the Indwelling Self of both the curser and the cursed (śaptṛ-śaptayor apy antarātmatayāvasthita iti bhāvaḥ);374 and as such, He is devoid of all partiality stemming or enacted from a limited self-concept (ataḥ svakīya-kṛta-vaiṣamyābhāvaḥ)375]; kṣantum — to forgive; tat — that; pāpam — sin [of cursing the king (asya rāja-śāpa-lakṣaṇasya)376]; [which (yat)377]; kṛtam — was committed; sva-bhṛtyeṣu — against His own devotee [(sva-bhakteṣu);378 against His own servant and dependent, who is by all means to be protected and cared for by Him (pālya-bhṛtyeṣu)379]; apāpeṣu — who is without offense [(niraparādheṣu);380 signifying that he was not at all deserving of our curse because he was then in a miserable condition, being exhausted and afflicted by hunger and thirst (kṣut-tṛḍbhyāṁ yaḥ śramas tena yutaḥ ata eva dīnaś ca tathā-bhūtaḥ sarvathā’smac-chāpaṁ nārhati)381]; bālena — by a child; apakva-buddhinā — of unripened discernment [or devoid of discernment (viveka-rahitena);382 meaning, by one in whom authentic seeing capacity had not yet arisen (apūrva-darśinā)].
Translation
May Bhagavān, the Immanent Self of all living beings, forgive the sin that was committed against His own devotee, who is without offense, by a child of unripened discernment.
