स्वामिन्यघं यद्दासानां द्वारपानां शुनामिव ॥ ३३ ॥
svāminy aghaṁ yad dāsānāṁ dvāra-pānāṁ śunām iva
Synonyms
aho — alas; [just see (paśyatām)279]; adharmaḥ — the immorality; pālānām — of the rulers [rājñām280]; pīvnām — [who are] corpulent [or robust (puṣṭānām)]; iva — like; bali-bhujām — crows [lit., “the devourers of oblations or fragments of food”; (kākānām)]; yat — which [i.e., this (ayam)281]; agham — offense [pāpācaraṇam]; dāsānām — of the servants [meaning the kings (rājñām)282]; svāmini — against their master [against a brāhmaṇa (brāhmaṇe)283]; iva — [is] like; dvāra-pānām śunām — [that] of watchdogs [standing watch at the gate (dvāra-pālānāṁ śunām);284 meaning that they are not at liberty to enter the owner’s house (gṛhaṁ mā praviśatu)285]; [that bite their own keeper (svāminam eva bhaksayanti)286].
Translation
Alas, just see the immorality of the rulers, who are corpulent like crows! This offense of the servants against their master is like that of watchdogs that bite their own keeper.
