स कथं तद्गृहे द्वाःस्थः सभाण्डं भोक्तुमर्हति ॥ ३४ ॥
sa kathaṁ tad-gṛhe dvāḥ-sthaḥ sabhāṇḍaṁ bhoktum arhati
Synonyms
kṣatra-bandhuḥ — a lowly kṣatriya; hi — [is] certainly; nirūpitaḥ — designated [or appointed (niyojitaḥ)287]; gṛha-pālaḥ — [as] a watchdog [(gṛha-pālaḥ śvāḥ);288 or as a gatekeeper, who is comparable to a dog (śva-vad dvāra-rakṣakaḥ)289]; brāhmaṇaiḥ — by the brāhmaṇas; [so]; katham — how can; saḥ — he; dvāḥ-sthaḥ — [whose] place is at the gate [who is fit only to remain at the gate (dvāri sthātuṁ yogyaḥ san)290]; arhati — be worthy; [to enter (praviśya)291]; tat-gṛhe — their home; bhoktum — [and] eat; sa-bhāṇḍam — from their plate [to eat ghee or other items set on their plate (bhāṇḍa-sthitaṁ vastu ghṛtādi), implying, “What right does this king have to suddenly enter the hermitage of sages and request water from them?” (tena rājñāṁ munīnām āśrama-madhye sahasā praveśe tatra jalādi prārthane ca kā yogyateti bhāvaḥ)292].
Translation
A lowly kṣatriya is certainly designated as a watchdog by the brāhmaṇas. So how can he, whose place is at the gate, be worthy to enter their home and eat from their plate?
