आपाययति गोविन्द पादपद्मासवं मधु ॥ १२ ॥
āpāyayati govinda-pāda-padmāsavaṁ madhu
Synonyms
[while dutifully engaged (saṁlagnānām)89]; asmin — in this; karmaṇi — fire sacrifice [satre90]; anāśvāse — the outcome of which is unassured [which is unreliable (aviśvasanīye) because the results are uncertain (phala niścayābhāvāt), owing to numerous discrepancies in application (vaiguṇya bāhulyena)]; dhūmra-ātmanām — our bodies became blackened [(dhūmraḥ vivarṇa ātmā śarīraṁ yeṣāṁ tān); or we became dispirited and discolored in mind and body (dhūmro virañjitau vivarṇāv ātmānau śarīra-citte yeṣām)91]; dhūma — [by] the smoke [dhūmena]; [yet now]; bhavān — you; [asmān] āpāyayati — are enabling us to drink [or to hear with rapt attention (samyak śrāvayati)92]; madhu — the ambrosial [madhuram]; āsavam — nectar [or the inebriating floral essence (makarandam)]; pāda-padma — from the lotus feet; govinda — [of] Govinda, Śrī Kṛṣṇa; [which, due to its intoxicating nature, causes one to forget the miseries of material existence (mādakatvena saṁsāra-duḥkha-vismārakam)93].
Translation
While dutifully engaged in this fire sacrifice, the outcome of which is unassured, our bodies became blackened by the smoke. Yet now, you are enabling us to drink the ambrosial nectar from the lotus feet of Govinda, Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
