भगवत्सङ्गिसङ्गस्य मर्त्यानां किमुताशिषः ॥ १३ ॥
bhagavat-saṅgi-saṅgasya martyānāṁ kim utāśiṣaḥ
Synonyms
[we (vayam)94]; na tulayāma — cannot equate [we cannot regard as being of an equal status (na samaṁ paśyāma);95 or we cannot entertain even the possibility of making a comparison, not to speak of actually doing so (tulayituṁ sambhāvanām api na kurmaḥ kim api tulanāṁ kurmaḥ)96]; svargam — heaven [the fruit of moral action (karma-phalam)97]; na — nor; apunaḥ-bhavam — liberation [(mokṣam), the fruit of immediate awareness (jñāna-phalam)98]; lavena api — with even a moment [yo lavaḥ aty alpaḥ kālaḥ tenāpi]; saṅgasya — of association; bhagavat-saṅgi — [with] devotees who are wholly attuned to Bhagavān [(bhaktās teṣām);99 such as you (tvādṛśasya)100]; kim uta [vaktavyam] — to say nothing of; āśiṣaḥ — the petty blessings [(tucchā āśiṣaḥ), such as rulership over a kingdom (rājyādyāḥ); or the blessings of worldly prosperity and wish fulfillment (artha-kāmādīn)101]; martyānām — [sought by] mortal beings; [owing to the fact that by the association of saintly devotees, the sprout of bhakti, which is supremely rare, is brought forth within the heart (yataḥ sādhu-saṅgena parama-durlabhāyā bhakter aṅkuro hṛdy udbhavati)102].
Translation
We cannot equate heaven or liberation with even a moment’s association with devotees who are wholly attuned to Bhagavān, to say nothing of the petty blessings sought by mortal beings.
